Why Knowing Who You Are Is Essential for Victory

I get a small commission for purchases made through links in this post.

The first step in finding victory through prayer during hard times is understanding your identity in Christ.

Have you ever wondered why you can’t seem to catch a break?

Sometimes we hit seasons where the hard times just don’t let up. They keep coming and coming and coming until we think we can’t take anymore. And then something else happens. I want to tell you something I’ve learned over the years: the reason the devil keeps attacking you is because you keep getting back up.

He knows that you have the potential to do some serious damage to his plans. And his job is to stop you before you realize how much power you truly have.

Listen, you are a daughter of the King! There is nothing He has that He will not give if you simply go to Him and ask. If you are walking through a hard time and can’t seem to get peace or victory, it could be that you don’t understand who you are and what that means.

You know who does know exactly who you are? Satan. And it’s his mission to keep you confused about who you are.

Identity is key to victory.

Why Your Identity in Christ Matters

Your identity comes from your Heavenly Father. The Bible tells us that God knows exactly who we are before we are even born. When it comes to knowing who you are, there’s only one question you need to ask yourself: Who does God say I am?

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9 NLT

Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. Psalm 139:14 NLT

If you listen to these commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today, and if you carefully obey them, the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always be on top and never at the bottom. Deuteronomy 28:13 NLT

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. Romans 8:37-38

Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. Luke 10:19 NLT

Those are just a few verses to get you started. Spend some time searching the scriptures to see what God has to say about who you are. Read the verses, memorize them, and then stand on all the promises that belong to you as a daughter of the King!

Here’s a short list of the things you can do when you understand your identity in Christ:

  1. Battle the lies of the enemy
  2. Manage your emotions when they try to overtake you
  3. Dream and hope for a prosperous future
  4. Heal from any hurt that you’ve suffered
  5. Forgive others when they sin against you
  6. Tell the devil where to go and how to get there

When you embrace your identity in Christ you become unstoppable. There is nothing Satan can throw at you that you can’t defeat with the truth. You never have to wonder if God is really listening to your prayers or if He will really give you the desires of your heart.

God is a good Father. He loves you and only wants what’s best for you. Is there something that you need right now? Go boldly to your Father’s throne and ask Him for it!
